You Don’t Have to ‘Just Live With It’ Anymore

Acupuncture is especially effective in treating many Women’s Health issues, including PMS, fertility, fibroids, menopause and labor induction.

Many women have come to believe that cramps, irritability, or daily hot flashes are normal and something that has to be suffered through.  Any uncomfortable symptoms associated with menopause, menses, or fibroids are an indication that there is an underlying imbalance that can be corrected with acupuncture and herbs.

Chinese medicine is safe, effective and works quickly. Following my protocol of herbs and regular acupuncture, I expect a typical PMS or menopause patient see a 50% reduction in symptoms after 1 month, and 80% after 2 months, with lasting results.

Pre-Menstrual Syndrome

It is estimated that 60% of American women suffer every month from some form of PMS.  Cramps, bloating, irritability, depression, breast tenderness, and headaches do not have to be part of your monthly cycle.  These symptoms arise when there is an underlying imbalance or stagnation in the body.

Although premenstrual syndrome is considered a modern phenomenon, acupuncturists have been treating what they called “menstrual movement disease” for thousands of years.  Acupuncture does not merely suppress symptoms, but rebalances the entire body, resulting in improved overall health, a decrease in anxiety and a pain-free, regular cycle.

A typical course of treatment for PMS spans 3-4 menstrual cycles with the number of treatments declining each month.  A recent study found that among women with severe pre-menstrual symptoms, 77.8% of them experienced no form of PMS after three months of weekly treatments (Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2002).

Menopause

Menopause itself is not a disease.  It is a normal physiological change; nature’s way of slowing the aging process in women past child-bearing age.  Unfortunately, many women do not transverse this cusp easily.  If the body has internal deficiencies, a number of symptoms can occur.  These include:  Hot flashes, Insomnia, Night Sweats, Depression, Anxiety, Heart Palpitations, Uterine Spotting and Flooding, Fatigue, Migraines, and Osteoporosis.

Acupuncture is a safe and highly effective alternative to hormone therapy.  When treating menopausal syndrome, combining acupuncture with herbal medicine is key.  Chinese herbs safely and naturally balance the hormones, and bring none of the risks of HRT.

Even severe menopausal symptoms can be eliminated or markedly reduced after only a couple weeks of treatment.  It can work for you, too - a study found that of 30 menopausal women who received acupuncture, 28 of them had permanent relief from their symptoms after just one month of treatment (Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, #6 1992).

American women report more symptoms associated with menopause than any other women in the world.  Only 3% of women in Japan and China report menopausal hot flashes, while 30% of menopausal American women report “frequent and severe” hot flashes.  Why the discrepancy?  It could be the differences in diet, exercise, attitudes about menopause, or the willingness to try alternative, natural therapies.

Fibroids

Fibroids can be painful and discouraging.  Surgical therapy may provide some relief in the short-term, but because the underlying pathology is not cured, the adhesions often return and spread to other areas of the body.  Because it addresses the root of the problem, Chinese medicine provides lasting results.

Herbal medicine is an important part of treating fibroids.  The herbal prescription safely and naturally breaks up adhesions and prevents further adhesions from forming.  Acupuncture increases the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid, releases endorphins and boosts the body’s natural immunity.

If you suffer from fibroids, there are options for you.  You do not have to ‘just live with it’ anymore.

Fertility and Pregnancy

Struggles with fertility can be taxing both physically and psychologically.  Chinese medicine helps to calm the mind while balancing the hormones, which greatly improves chances of getting and staying pregnant.  In fact, many fertility doctors are now requiring that their patients receive acupuncture directly before and after IVF.

Whether you chose to complete forego Western medicine, or are in the process of IVF, acupuncture can help you.  My goal is to provide a compassionate, supportive environment, where the focus is on achieving optimal health for the patient, and not just getting pregnant.

I provide support throughout the entire pregnancy, from conception through labor preparation and induction.  During the first tri-mester acupuncture helps to sustain the pregnancy and keep nausea to a minimum.  After the first trimester, I offer pre-natal massage and immune supporting acupuncture.  Many of the complaints associated with the later stages of pregnancy – back pain, insomnia, constipation, acid reflux – can be safely and effectively treated with Chinese medicine.

I have over an 80% success rate inducing labor with acupuncture. (“Success” means full labor within 24 hours without additional chemical induction) However, I’ve found that if I can treat a woman 2-3 times in the weeks leading up to the due date, often an induction is not needed.  Acupuncture can help descend/turn the baby, ripen the cervix and provide the mom-to-be with the stamina needed for labor.
